Let's save Marylebone Farmers' Market all over again
Over 100 people have signed an online petition to save the site of the Marylebone Farmers' Market after Westminster Council revealed it will yet again review its future.
Moxon Street car park, tucked away behind Marylebone High Street , has been home to the weekly farmers' market since 2003. The council is asking for views on what should happen to it in the future.
From next autumn, the council will be free to sell the car park, which it has owned since 1991. Currently the council cannot dispose of it without first securing the permission of the Secretary of State for Education. That requirement however expires on 31 August 2011, after which the council will be free to dispose of it.
Two years ago the council planned to build an adult education centre on the site of the market, although these plans were eventually dropped.
The petition to save the farmers' market has been set up by Liberal Democrat campaigner Stuart Bonar, who organised a similar petition in 2008 when the market's home was last threatened.
Commenting, Stuart said: "We saved the market's Marylebone home back in 2008 with a 631-signature petition. I guess we'll just have to save it all over again.
"I am really pleased that over 100 people have signed the petition within days of it going live. The warm words that people have had for the market have really underlined for me why this is such an important campaign.
"Marylebone Farmers' Market is special. Each Sunday it brings 30 to 40 stalls of fruit, vegetables and all kinds of fresh produce into central London for local people to buy.
"Sadly, Westminster Council is yet again considering the future of market's home, including the possibility that it will be sold off for development. Well, they are asking for the views of local people, so let's let them have it loud and clear."
Petition forms are being delivered to households near the farmers' market's Marylebone home. People can also sign it online at http://www.gopetition.com/petition/40579.html
