Westminster Tories should be backing Fairtrade products, like the ones Martin has put in his shopping basket
Conservative-run Westminster is one of only two London councils that is refusing to back Fairtrade products.
These products mean better prices and working conditions for people in the developing world. They also mean more sustainable production, which is better for the world and for everyone.
Westminster councillors are unwilling to vote for a formal council motion backing fairly traded products. Every London council has done this, with the exception of Westminster and Barnet - both run by the Conservatives.
Commenting, local Liberal Democrat Martin Thompson said, "Westminster should join London's LibDem councils and all the others in backing Fairtrade products. The council has the power to give a real boost to fair trade and should use that power.
"What can they have against fair trade - against better incomes and working conditions for people in the developing world?
"It's telling that both the London councils refusing to do this are run by the Conservatives. They can pump out all the fluffy media spin they like, but they haven't changed. They remain, in their own words, the nasty party."
