Sue Baring scored the best Liberal Democrat vote ever in Lancaster Gate ward
Liberal Democrat candidate Sue Baring won almost a quarter of the votes in yesterday's Lancaster Gate by-election, securing the biggest LibDem share of the vote in the ward since the council was created in the 1960s.
The full results are:
Liberal Democrat Sue Baring 24% (UP 7%)
Conservative 60% (DOWN 5%)
Labour 15% (DOWN 2%)
This is the worst Labour vote since 1982, and although they won with a clear majority it is the worst Conservative performance since 1974.
Commenting on the result, LibDem candidate Sue Baring said, "I'd like to thank all those who cast their vote for me. I am pleased that almost a quarter of all voters backed the Liberal Democrats. The result confirms the positive response my team and I received from so many local residents on the doorstep.
"The Liberal Democrats are on the up locally, and I am looking forward to future gains.
"Finally, I wish the new councillor, Andrew Smith, well. He now represents my area on the council, so I hope he does a good job!"
