Police officers should be free to fighting crime, not tied up following targets, say local Liberal Democrats
Local Liberal Democrats are welcoming plans to free our police forces from the grip of central government control, bureaucracy and targets.
Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary Chris Huhne MP launched the policies, and they will be debated at the party's conference in Bournemouth next week.
Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Sue Baring said, "Police officers should be free to spend more time policing communities rather than chasing government targets.
"Endless interference and targets issued by central government do little to catch criminals and deter crime. Police in our area are far better placed than any government minister to decide what our local priorities are.
"Our proposals also call for local police authorities to be elected by local people, rather than appointed by ministers."
Other proposals to be debated by the Liberal Democrats include recruiting an extra 10,000 police officers, paid for by scrapping ID cards.
