Police officers fighting crime in London face a tough year thanks to Boris's budget
Boris Johnson, the new Conservative Mayor of London, is proposing a budget rise for the Metropolitan Police of just 1.75%, despite inflation running at more than twice that level.
Commenting, Liberal Democrat Martin Thompson said, "Such a small rise means that the police cannot even keep pace with rising prices. Once you take inflation into account, this effectively amounts to a budget cut.
"I don't remember the Conservatives telling voters during the London elections that they would give the police such a raw deal."
