Gordon Brown's first year in Number 10 'has delivered nothing for Church Street residents'

Church Street has not benefited from Gordon Brown's first year as prime minister, Liberal Democrat candidate in the Church Street by-election Martin Thompson said today.

The by-election campaign in Westminster's Church Street ward officially starts today [27th June], which is also the day that marks Mr Brown's first full year in office.

Commenting, LibDem candidate Martin Thompson said, "What has a year of Gordon Brown as prime minister delivered for the people of Church Street? Well, higher prices and higher taxes is all that comes to my mind.

"Mr Brown was meant to be Labour's saviour, riding in to save the day after years of Tony Blair and war in Iraq. Instead of renewed leadership however Brown has given us many long months of dithering, indecision and chaotic government. He has delivered nothing for Church Street residents.

"Working people here in Church Street and across the country were hit hard by Gordon Brown's 10p tax grab, and many will not be fully compensated despite the Government's panic U-turn measures in response to the crisis.

"At the by-election almost a month from today, on Thursday 24th July, residents in Westminster's Church Street ward will get the opportunity to pass their judgement on the first year of Gordon Brown's leadership. I suspect few will want to endorse him."
