Merlene is thanking all those who supported her in the London elections
LibDem mayoral candidate Brian Paddick polled more than 60,000 first and second preference votes in the West Central constituency of which Westminster is a part, official figures revealed.
The former senior police officer was the first choice of 13,829 local voters, with a further 46,700 giving him their second vote. Added together, this means that 60,529 local people gave him a vote.
LibDem candidate for the London Assembly's West Central constituency, Merlene Emerson, won the support of 15,934 votes, but was unsuccessful in her attempt to be elected to the Assembly.
Commenting, Merlene said, "I would like to say a big 'thank you' to everyone who supported me in the election.
"It has been a real honour and a pleasure for me to stand as your candidate. I would have loved to be able to represent the people in West Central and brought more diversity to the London Assembly. Fortunately I will still be able to continue with some of my campaigns as the prospective LibDem parliamentary candidate for Hammersmith."
Outside of London, in the local elections held on the same day across England and Wales, the Liberal Democrats won more votes than the Labour party, and finished the night with more councillors and in control of more councils. The gains came in the north of England - in Hull, Sheffield and Burnley - as well as in the south - in St Albans.
