Liberal Democrats want the people to decide whether we stay in or get out of the EU
Local Liberal Democrat spokesperson Sue Baring is calling on local Conservatives to back the LibDem campaign for an 'in or out' referendum on the European Union.
Sue said, "It has been over 30 years since the British people last voted on whether or not they want to remain in the EU. No-one who is under 50 took part. The Liberal Democrats want to give people that choice.
"Sadly, when LibDem MPs secured a vote in the Commons last November on holding a referendum, Labour and Conservative MPs combined to vote it down. It is sad that they denied British people their say.
"The EU isn't perfect, far from it. It has however delivered many positive benefits such as cheaper goods, better environmental protection, increased freedom to work and live abroad, and strong measures to tackle international crime.
"Most of all, it has built a continent of peace, and secured democracy firstly in former dictatorships like Spain and Portugal, and then across the east. Europe has transformed itself in the last 20 years, and that is in no small part thanks to the EU.
"I believe passionately that Europe is good for Britain, and I would relish the campaign. I am sure that after hearing the many positive arguments for the EU, rather than the constant negative nonsense they hear, the British people would back the EU overwhelmingly."
