Labour's red rose will not be flowering on Thursday 3rd May
With polling day in the Abbey Road ward by-election less than a week away, the latest opinion polls underline that Labour has no chance of winning. The choice will be between the Liberal Democrat candidate, Mark Blackburn, and the Conservative.
"Labour support is now at bedrock", reports the Guardian [Wednesday 25th April], as the party drops in the newspaper's latest ICM poll.
The Times is reporting that "Labour faces being wiped out in parts of England" [Wednesday 25th April].
Also this week, the latest CommunicateResearch poll in the Independent [Tuesday 24th April] put support for Labour at its lowest level since 1983. This was backed up by the Daily Telegraph today [Friday 27th April], which reported that opinion polls are "suggesting Labour's worst performance since 1983."
Commenting, LibDem by-election candidate Mark Blackburn, who lives in the ward, said:
"Put simply, Labour will not win this by-election. They are collapsing in the opinion polls. On 3rd May, it's the LibDems or the Tories."
