One in 25 of Westminster's Council Tax bills is not paid
Westminster has one of the worst Council Tax collection rates of any London borough, according to government statistics just released.
In a league table of the capital's local authorities, Westminster finishes in lowly joint 26th place for the estimated Council Tax collection rate. Westminster fails to collect payment from one in every 25 households liable for the tax.
Even when only compared to other inner London authorities, Westminster finishes joint 7th out of 13. The Conservative-held Council's performance places them behind Islington, Camden, Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham, Tower Hamlets, and Lewisham.
Commenting, Mark Blackburn, who is the Liberal Democrat candidate in Westminster's Abbey Road by-election on 3rd May, said:
"This is just abysmal. We hear so much from the Tories in Westminster about how fantastic they are, but in league table after league table they are at best lacklustre. Their record does not match their spin.
"The Tories have had an iron grip on Westminster for decades. They deserve a wake-up call, and the by-election in Abbey Road on 3rd May gives voters a chance to do just that. With one seat up for grabs this is a perfect opportunity to give them the shock they need."
