Westminster taxpayers are set to have to shell out even more for the Lord Mayor's £90,000 limo
The bill for the upkeep of the Lord Mayor's £90,000 luxury Rolls Royce limousine is set to increase following the announcement in today's Budget that gas-guzzling vehicles will be liable for up to £300 in annual road tax, rising to £400 next year.
The additional cost, which will be paid by Westminster residents through their Council Tax bills, comes on top of the daily Congestion Charge paid whenever the limousine escorts the Lord Mayor around central London and the high petrol bills, also up as a result of the Budget, because of the vehicle's inefficiency.
Commenting, local Liberal Democrat Mark Blackburn said:
"This adds insult to injury. After only just posting a Council Tax rise that was higher than nine other London boroughs, this extra cost we now face is thanks to the refusal of Conservative-run Westminster to find the Lord Mayor a less environmentally-damaging vehicle.
"At the last election, the current Lord Mayor, Councillor Alexander Nicoll, gave a home address that was actually in Lambeth, so as someone who does not even live in Westminster he may not even qualify for the residents' discount. That would mean we pay out £8 every day, rather than just 80p.
"It's time for the Tories to realise that they are not members of the Royal Family and they do not need imperial trappings of office. Sell the limo!"
