We must see effective action to cut alcohol-related deaths in Westminster
The number of alcohol-related deaths in Westminster is up 31% at a time when the total for the whole of London is actually falling, according to the latest official figures available.
This shocking statistic means Westminster has the fifth highest rise of any London borough. Across the capital as a whole the total number fell 2%.
Responding to the figures, which were obtained by LibDem MP Lynne Featherstone, Westminster LibDem Mark Blackburn, said:
"I will be contacting the Council and the local NHS to ask what they plan to do to reduce the number of people dying of alcohol-related deaths in Westminster. We need this number to fall, not rise."
The number of alcohol-related deaths in Westminster rose by 31% from 26 in 2004 to 34 in 2005.
