Well over 600 people have now signed the Save Our Local Shops petition
Hundreds of local people have so far added their names to a petition to save local shops in Marylebone from the threat of an 11th Tesco opening in the area.
The proposed Tesco branch, planned for the corner of Lisson Grove and Hayes Place in W2, would be the 11th Tesco within a one-mile radius. Local Liberal Democrats fear that the effect of yet another new Tesco could be to force independent local shops out of business.
Martin Thompson, who lives a stone's throw from the proposed new Tesco site, said:
"There is clear local hostility to yet another Tesco in Marylebone. There are plenty of supermarkets here already - what we need is not more of them, but instead a healthy range of independent shops. That's good for competition and it's good for consumer choice.
"What is more, profits from locally-owned shops are kept in the area, not whisked off to some big corporate headquarters somewhere."
