Local support for the Save Our Local Shops petition is growing
A petition launched by Westminster Liberal Democrats to save local shops from the threat of a new Tesco opening in Marylebone has attracted 150 signatures, and support from local people is growing all the time.
The shop, planned for the corner of Lisson Grove and Hayes Place, would be the 11th Tesco within a one-mile radius. Local Liberal Democrats fear that the effect of yet another new Tesco opening in Marylebone could be to force independent local shops out of business.
The petition is available to sign online at http://campaigns.libdems.org.uk/saveourlocalshops and at independent local shops on Lisson Grove. Also local LibDems will shortly deliver letters to hundreds of local people which will include an update on developments and a petition sheet for signatures.
Martin Thompson, who is leading the campaign for the party and who lives in the area, said:
"I am very pleased that so many people are supporting the campaign to save our local shops. We are not against Tesco on principle, but with something like 10 already here within a one-mile radius, one has to ask whether another Tesco is really what the area needs.
"I fear that the result of yet another Tesco opening would be the closure of independent shops in the area. This is my neighbourhood, and I don't want to live is Tescoland. There must be space for other shops to exist!
"Please support the campaign and sign our petition."
Local people are also being encouraged to attend the Marylebone Area Forum between 6.30pm and 8.30pm on Tuesday 27 February in the Ballroom of the Landmark Hotel, 222 Marylebone Road (using the Melcombe Place entrance), to put their views across to Council decision-makers.
