Local LibDem Martin Thompson's petition to save local shops is being distributed to shopkeepers and residents
A petition is being launched by local Liberal Democrats against a new Tesco shop opening in Marylebone. The party fears that the impact of a new Tesco would force local independent shops out of business.
The petition, which will be circulated locally and is also available to sign online at http://campaigns.libdems.org.uk/saveourlocalshops objects to any big supermarket company building a shop on the corner of Lisson Grove and Hayes Place. The petition also calls on Westminster Council to reject any application by Tesco, and for the Council to develop new plans for the vacant site.
Liberal Democrat Martin Thompson, who lives in the area, said:
"Tesco is a successful company that makes profits counted in billions. I congratulate them on their continuing success, but I call upon them to act responsibly - as well as profitably.
"My estimate is that there are 10 Tescos already within a one-mile radius of the site, and we already have an M&S food shop at Marylebone station, a large Somerfield on Edgware Road, and a Sainsbury's at Paddington station.
"What I want to see is a lot more diversity on our high streets, with a range of independent shops as well as shops like Tesco. There are independent shops right now next to this site. I fear that they may well lose a lot of trade and effectively be driven out of business by this proposed new Tesco on the corner of Lisson Grove and Hayes Place. Such an outcome simply cannot be in the best interests of local people. The Council must act to stop any formal application from Tesco.
"We don't need a Tesco takeover. I encourage local people in Marylebone to sign the petition."
