LibDem members can help shape the party's manifesto for the next General Election
Members of the Liberal Democrats from Westminster and across the country are being invited to help shape the party's manifesto for the next General Election. People who join the party now will also be able to take part.
LibDem MP Steve Webb, who has been appointed by party leader Ming Campbell to write the party's next manifesto, has launched a website dedicated to debate amongst party members on what should go into the party's platform for the next election.
Westminster Liberal Democrat Neville Farmer commented:
"One of the reasons many people join the Liberal Democrats is because the party is democratic and welcomes debate. In the other two parties it is the leadership who take all the policy decisions and their members are lucky if they get the chance to rubber-stamp what their leaders in Parliament have already decided.
"What the LibDems are doing here is an excellent innovation. Party members from across the country will be able to discuss with each other manifesto messages and specific policy ideas. Steve Webb will be reading and commenting on discussions - and feeding all that into the policymaking process.
"We know that Tony Blair will stand down this year, and most likely Gordon Brown will replace him. The new Prime Minister may well call a snap General Election and so it's great that the LibDems are already talking about ideas for the manifesto. That gives enough time for proper debate. As a party member I am looking forward to taking part."
