Westminster Council should generate its own green energy
Westminster Liberal Democrats are calling for more spin from the Council - at least in the form of wind turbines on City Hall and its other offices to generate electricity for the Council. The party also wants the Council to install solar panels on Council office roofs.
The local LibDems, who wrote today to Sir Simon Milton, the Leader of the Council, are calling for the Council to "do its bit" for the environment.
Commenting, local LibDem Stuart Bonar , said:
"It was announced this month that the London Olympics is set to get its own wind turbine - something which the LibDems have supported - so why not Westminster as well?
"After a summer in which the sun beat down on Westminster so hard that the grass in Hyde Park turned brown, and with the wind of autumn and winter beginning to blow, the Council should embrace available technology to generate power from the weather. That would also cut the Council's utility bills and therefore the burden on taxpayers.
"It almost does not need spelling out that a wind turbine on City Hall is not enough, but it could be symbolic. It could be the cherry on top of a greener Council.
"We need a green thread running through everything the Council does. We don't want a Council, for example, where local taxpayers are forced to foot the petrol bill for the Lord Mayor's gas-guzzling limousine - as Westminster taxpayers currently do.
"A wind turbine would be a good start however. So, Sir Simon, let's have a little more spin from the Council, please."
