Taking away soup kitchens for homeless people is utterly despicable
Westminster Liberal Democrats are launching an online petition against the Conservatives' "utterly despicable" plans to close down soup kitchens for the homeless.
Dozens of organisations running soup kitchens in Westminster have been written to by the Council in an effort to close them down.
Commenting on the plans being spearheaded by Councillor Angela Harvey, the Conservative Cabinet Member for Housing, chair of the local Liberal Democrats Jo Hayes said:
"The homeless are the members of society who have the very least, yet the Tories seem to want to take away what little food and support they are receiving. Picking on the homeless is utterly despicable.
"David Cameron's Conservatives may want to try to convince us they are caring and sharing, but this is reminiscent of the worst excesses of Thatcherism. It's more Alan B'Stard than Mother Theresa."
The LibDem petition is available to sign online at http://campaigns.libdems.org.uk/homeless
The statement that people are encouraged to sign reads: "The call by Westminster Conservatives for central London soup kitchens for the homeless to be closed down is cold-hearted and callous. The homeless are people in need of help, not an unsightly nuisance to be swept away into the shadows by having their food taken away. Rather than fewer facilities and less help, Westminster should be working hard to provide more facilities and greater help. I call upon Westminster City Council to help the homeless, not punish them."
