Local Liberal Democrats are challenging Westminster's Lord Mayor to sell his limousine and buy a replacement car that does less damage to the environment.
Westminster taxpayers paid £90,000 in 2003 to buy the Lord Mayor a Rolls Royce Park Ward limousine. The vehicle is capable of a very poor 12 miles per gallon in city driving conditions.
Local LibDem Stuart Bonar said, "At the election the Conservatives fought under the slogan, Vote Blue, Go Green, but how can that mean anything when the Conservative Lord Mayor is crisscrossing central London in one of least environmentally-friendly cars available. Their green credentials are an absolute joke.
"I have today written to the Lord Mayor to challenge him personally to sell this limousine and, with the money raised, buy what is called a hybrid car, such as the Toyota Prius, which can switch between electric power and a conventional petrol engine. These are perfectly good cars of a decent size. Taxpayers would also be freed of the need to pay for the Lord Mayor's Congestion Charge as the Prius is exempt.
"I hope that he will accept this challenge and put the needs of the environment and reducing air pollution above any desire he may have to surround himself with high luxury."
