Westminster City Council must urgently introduce recycling for drinks cartons, local Liberal Democrats are demanding.
Around 55,000 tonnes of household waste every year is made up of drinks cartons, like those used for fruit juice and milk. That amounts to 2.3kg per household per year.
As a survey last year revealed, six London councils, like LibDem-run Kingston-upon-Thames, are already recycling drinks cartons. A further 24 London councils are interested in introducing it.
Westminster is one of only a tiny minority - and the only one in central London - that do not recycle drinks cartons and have declared themselves as having no interest in recycling them.
Local Liberal Democrat chair, Jo Hayes, said:
"These types of cartons are made up of a bond between plastic and cardboard, which means that it is harder than normal to recycle them. That said, there are London councils already achieving this, and a couple of dozen wanting to do so. It is a great shame that Westminster doesn't even seem interested in trying.
"When it comes to recycling, Westminster must really do a lot better. It must strive to be the best, not - as it seems to - content itself with mediocrity."
